Lenses For Complex Prescriptions & Eye Conditions

Not every eye is a perfect match for off-the-shelf contact lenses. If you’ve been told you're not a candidate for contacts, struggle with comfort, or have a complex prescription, specialty contact lenses may be the solution you’ve been waiting for.

Mountain West Eyecare offers custom lens fittings for patients with unique visual needs using advanced designs and materials to provide clear and comfortable vision.

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid lenses that rest on the white part of the eye, called the sclera. They vault over the cornea, creating a fluid-filled space that protects the eye and supports hydration. These lenses are especially beneficial for:

  • Keratoconus or corneal irregularities

  • Post-surgical eyes (e.g., LASIK complications)

  • Severe dry eye disease

  • High astigmatism or hard-to-correct prescriptions

Because they provide a smooth optical surface and consistent moisture, scleral lenses offer sharp vision and all-day comfort, even for sensitive or medically complex eyes.

Hybrid Contact Lenses

Hybrid lenses combine the crisp visual clarity of a rigid gas permeable (RGP) center with the soft, flexible skirt of a soft lens, giving you the best of both worlds. They're ideal for patients who:

  • Need vision correction for high astigmatism or irregular corneas

  • Want better comfort than traditional RGPs

  • Have difficulty adapting to full-rigid lenses

Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Lenses

RGP lenses are small, durable lenses that provide excellent vision correction by maintaining their shape on the eye. This helps create a smooth surface, even over irregular corneas. They work well for:

  • Moderate to high astigmatism

  • Patients needing sharp, precise vision

  • Individuals who want a lens that’s long-lasting and cost-effective

RGPs require more adaptation than soft lenses, but many patients find they offer exceptional clarity and long-term reliability.

How We Fit Specialty Contact Lenses

Specialty lenses require a more personalized fitting process than standard soft lenses. Here’s what to expect:

  1. First, we’ll perform a full eye exam and corneal evaluation, including advanced measurements of your eye’s surface and shape. Depending on your eye condition or prescription, we may use additional diagnostic tools to assess corneal irregularities, tear film quality, or lens tolerance.
  2. Next, our eye doctor determines which type of specialty lens is best suited for your eyes. You’ll try a diagnostic lens in-office, and she'll assess the fit, comfort, and vision quality.
  3. From there, we’ll order a custom lens based on your exact measurements. Once it arrives, we’ll walk you through insertion and removal, lens care, and schedule follow-up appointments.

Specialty lenses may take a little more time to get right, but the payoff is clearer, more comfortable vision designed specifically for your eyes.
