What Is Considered an Eye Emergency?

Some symptoms may seem small but point to something severe, others are more obvious. If you’re experiencing any of the following, it’s best to get checked right away:

  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes

  • Flashes of light or new floaters (possible retinal tear or detachment)

  • Eye pain with redness or sensitivity to light

  • A foreign object stuck in your eye

  • Eye injury from an accident or trauma

  • Chemical exposure or burn

  • Scratched eye (corneal abrasion)

  • Significant eyelid swelling, styes, or signs of infection

  • Sudden double vision or difficulty focusing

  • Discharge, crusting, or swelling around the eye

If you’re dealing with any of these symptoms, don’t wait to see if it goes away. Eye emergencies don’t always hurt, but they can still cause permanent damage.

What to Do in an Eye Emergency

Knowing how to respond in the moment can help protect your sight and prevent further injury. Here’s what we recommend if you or a loved one is facing a sudden eye issue:

  1. Call our office right away. We’ll help you decide the best next step and may be able to see you same-day, depending on availability.

  2. Avoid rubbing or touching your eye. Pressure or friction can make things worse.

  3. If a chemical is involved, flush the eye immediately with clean water and keep rinsing while you seek care.

  4. Keep the affected eye closed if possible to prevent strain or additional irritation.

  5. Bring any contact lenses, medications, or information about the injury or exposure with you to your appointment.

It's also important to know what to avoid:

  1. Do not try to remove a foreign object yourself.

  2. Do not apply over-the-counter eye drops unless we’ve told you to.

  3. Do not delay treatment or “wait it out.”

  4. Do not drive yourself if your vision is compromised.
